Long Synopsis: MUSK is Oscar-winning producer/director Alex Gibney’s latest exploration into the corrupting influence of power. As he has in such acclaimed efforts as Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, and We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, Gibney shows himself to be a master at exposing the dark truths behind the façade of public personas to demonstrate how power corrupts, and how absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Given his global economic and political reach, the tech titan Elon Musk is his latest and, perhaps, most controversial subject. Through meticulous research and reporting, Gibney reframes all we know about the tech titan, revealing that the so-called “visionary genius” is little more than the 21st-century reincarnation of a confidence man.
Musk himself has asserted that perceived reality may be nothing more than a simulation, and Gibney uses Musk’s own words to prove that even his most heralded accomplishments are rife with illusion and misdirection. Musk’s carefully crafted media image conceals a darkness fueled by misogyny, drugs, and a relentless drive to accrue power. The promise of such heavily government-funded projects as SpaceX and Tesla has been marred by some notable technological failures. Yet, these enterprises have made him the richest man in the world, often at the cost of genuine innovation.
Musk’s more recent ventures, Twitter (X), Starlink (a division of SpaceX), xAI and its chatbot, Grok, seem to be less centered on technological advancement than on stock manipulation, and using the money and power that results to exert control and stifle dissent, not only in the U.S. but worldwide.
MUSK is more than a deep dive into the mind of a power-hungry megalomaniac; it is a warning.
