Family returns home to restore beloved 1915 landmark where owner's grandmother once cared for patients

FORT BRAGG, CA — (July 21, 2026) — What was once the place where generations of Fort Bragg newborns entered the world, recovered from illness and found comfort during life's most pivotal moments has begun a remarkable new chapter.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, The Grey Whale Inn will officially celebrate its grand opening, marking the latest chapter in the evolution of Fort Bragg's former hospital (opened in 1915), now thoughtfully restored as the 10-room Grey Whale Inn. More than a historic preservation project, the opening represents a deeply personal homecoming for Fort Bragg native Natalie Dingman, whose grandmother once worked as a nurse within the very same walls. Today, Natalie and her husband, Joe, proudly own the property, bringing its story full circle.

After years spent traveling the country as a military family, Natalie and Joe returned home to Fort Bragg to restore one of the community's cherished historic landmarks. Together with their son, Steve; daughter, Ashley (a registered nurse); son-in-law, Zack; Natalie's father, Larry Silva; her brother, Jason Silva; and his wife, Jesieka Silva, the family lovingly restored the property, preserving its legacy while welcoming a new generation of visitors to create lasting memories of their own.

"This building has always been part of my family's story," says Natalie. "My grandmother cared for patients here, and growing up in Fort Bragg, this place was always part of our community's history. Coming home to restore it feels deeply personal. We wanted to preserve the memories held within these walls while creating a place where new ones can be made."

Adding another layer of personal history, one of the building's former owners, Dr. Hamlin, was Natalie's childhood neighbor.

The Grey Whale Inn first welcomed guests during a soft opening in March 2026. The August 8 celebration marks the property's official grand opening under Dingman family ownership.

While the building has welcomed travelers as The Grey Whale Inn in years past, the Dingman family's meticulous restoration has reimagined the property while honoring every possible piece of its remarkable history.

Grand Opening Celebration

The community is invited to attend the free public celebration from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 615 N. Main St., Fort Bragg, CA 95437.

Festivities include:

·         A ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce.

·         A historic plaque rededication by the Native Daughters of the Golden West, honoring the building's more than 110-year history and civic significance to the Fort Bragg community. The plaque was originally dedicated nearly 30 years ago, on August 25, 1996.

·         Open house tours showcasing the restored property and its preserved historical features.

·         Schnaubelt’s Distillery will be pouring spirit tastings and small bites will be offered throughout the inn.

Preserving History, One Room at a Time

Rather than hiding the building's medical past, the Dingman family embraced it. Constructed in 1915 as Fort Bragg's first hospital, the building expanded in 1939 to accommodate obstetrics, and for decades welcomed countless Mendocino Coast residents into the world.

Each guest room tells a piece of the hospital's story. The Whale Watch Suite once served as the surgical suite and operating room, while The Chapel remains the building's former chapel, offering a peaceful reminder of the solace it once provided to patients and families. The Legacy Room occupies the original nursery where newborns were bathed, complete with the original sink that remains today.

The basement conference center once served as the hospital kitchen and has been reimagined as an intimate meeting and event space.

Throughout the inn, guests will discover carefully preserved artifacts from the property's hospital years, including an original ear, nose and throat examination chair, vintage medical equipment, the building's original music box and the original patient rolodex, now transformed into an interactive historical display featuring stories of Fort Bragg and Mendocino County narrated by Natalie's mother, Vicki Silva.

Adding another deeply personal touch, every original oil painting displayed throughout the property was created by Natalie's father, Larry Silva, making the artwork as much a part of the family's legacy as the building itself.

The Dingman family continues working to preserve as many original elements of the hospital as possible, ensuring the building's remarkable history remains woven into every guest experience.

Located just blocks from the historic Skunk Train depot and within walking distance of Glass Beach, downtown Fort Bragg shops and local restaurants, The Grey Whale Inn offers 10 individually designed guest rooms, including two penthouse suites with private decks.
